FOLLOWING SUITS

This series investigates the standard deck of playing cards as an authority for mark-making. Rituals of shuffling and dealing are translated into maps of randomized relationships between suits and ranks. The culminating works negotiate balance between randomness and order, archiving each shuffled deck into an abstracted drawing system. The cards serve as co-authors of the work, with both participants making their own compromises for the production of a single drawing. It begs the question: who is the commanding force at play? How do you establish balance between both influences? Infused with these tensions, the work produced is its own gamble. The drawings themselves cannot be separated from the history of the deck, deeply imbued in both aesthetics and procedure. The result is a game of memories: an atlas of finished diagrams recalls the familiar impression of the card game, while the method of representation beckons towards the unfamiliar–a depiction of the deck and its future manifestations.
